During they’re travels, the rabbits are attacked by crow. This is one of the first examples of a “predator vs prey” moment in the book. As the bird goes to attack hazel; one of the youngest in the group, blackberry, who is the biggest and strongest, hits him with his paw to scare him away. This is probably the most realistic and re-occurring example of nature in the book. Not only with crows, but other wild animals;rats in particular.
Stay Hidden
When trying to hide from the oslaw, nature is often used against them, whether it be crossing obstacles or fighting off predators. In this case, the rabbits use it to their advantage. When trying to rest, the rabbits try to find a safe space where they can’t be seen. They end up settling in a patch of tall grass. It is such a simple example yet such a relevant one because if they didn’t use nature to their advantage, who could have known what was going to happen.
The First Obstacle
Nature is shown as an theme early on in the rabbits journey to leave the warren. While they are on the run, they must cross a river to be assured that it is safe to rest. This is the first example of nature as an obstruction on their journey. They were able to cross the river but were skeptical because it is a difficult task. It was even harder because one of the rabbits had an injured paw but they managed to find a piece of wood for them to transport them across. If that wasn’t enough, it was night time making it harder to navigate their way across.
Condos
After a meeting with the head rabbit in the oslaw (the form of government/police in the warren) Fiver is walking back to his hole with his friend blackberry when he sees a sign advertising a condo that is being put up. Obviously since hes a rabbit, he can’t read it but is still suspicious and it makes Blackberry wonder if it has any correlation to the vision Fiver had. This is a another example of the theme because the building of condos and other high rise residence buildings are a big environment destroyer, and the number of them is only increasing .
Litter
one day when fiver was walking through the warren with his friends blackberry, he sees a cigarette butt on the ground. this is a common case of litter, which is a factor to the destruction of nature and green spaces. The cigarette butt isn’t a very big problem, but its a sign that humans are there and have no regard or respect for that environment. The rabbits are oblivious to what it is but it’s an early sign that fiver’s prediction is coming true. This is an example of the destruction of nature which is a huge issue in today’s world.
